Traffic Skills Course Overview

Our Traffic Skills Course is designed to give our students some practical experience riding in today's traffic. The Vancouver Island Safety Council provides students with a wide range and variety of street bikes to use in this course. Over two full days of riding, students will build and expand on the skills they learned in the Novice Skills Course*. Students are formed into groups of 4 students and 1 instructor and will experience both rural and urban riding environments.

The Traffic Skills Course has a strong focus on preparing students for their upcoming ICBC Road Test and we incorporate specific exercises and techniques aimed to help you succeed in passing your test the first time. Students who successfully complete our Traffic Skills Course then have the option of using one of our motorcycles for their ICBC Road Test as well as taking advantage of our reserved ICBC Road Test appointment slots.

To date, graduates of the Vancouver Island Safety Council Traffic Skills Course have a 90% 1st time pass rate for the ICBC Road Test!

* You must have successfully completed our Novice Skills Course in order to participate in our Traffic Skills Course.

Classroom Theory Session

[x1 - 0.75 hour sessions]

Students will begin the Traffic Skills Course with a short introductory/theory lesson at our classroom. During this brief session, students will review group riding basics, riding formations, parking techniques, traffic course overview and general course instructions. Students are encouraged to ask questions and to voice any concerns that they may have about riding in traffic.

Students will then make their way to Western Speedway where they will be split into their riding groups and select a motorcycle** that they wish to use for the duration of the course.

** Motorcycle selection my be determined by your instructor

Riding in Traffic

[x2 - 8 hour sessions]

After performing pre-trip inspections and warming up on the traffic motorcycles, each group of 4 students, along with their assigned instructor, will depart on a set of predetermined routes throughout Victoria and surrounding areas.

Students will spend the next two days riding in many different real world situations and environments. Everything from gentle sweeping rural roads to riding through the busy and congested downtown core, all while continuing to practice and hone their riding skills under constant supervision and assessment from their traffic instructor.

We try to provide our students with as many different riding 'experiences' as we can fit into two full days of riding, all with a focus on riding to the level required to pass your ICBC Road Test the first time!

ICBC Class 6/8 Road Test

Upon successful completion of our Traffic Skills Course, students can then book their ICBC Road Test appointments through the VISC office using one of the Safety Councils "reserved" ICBC testing slots (all tests must be booked in advance). Students who have successfully completed the Traffic Skills Course will then be allowed to use the motorcycle they used during their Traffic Course to ride their ICBC Road Test at no extra charge.

ICBC does charge $50.00 to take the Road Test and is payable to ICBC when you show up for your test. The Road Test is approximately 45 minutes in duration where you will perform key riding skills, intersection and road maneuvers your See-Think-Do skills (SIPDE), and your ability to spot hazards.

When you have completed your road test, students who are using our motorcycles are asked to immediately return with them to the VISC garage at Western Speedway.
